Ramblings of an Absurdist

To whom it may concern, do you know the distinct philosophies of absurdism and nihilism? I don't think you do, cause they're pretty different and would clash violently if you put them in a room together. I mean, one is about creating your own meaning and the other is that there is no meaning. You can't just pick and choosee seperate brilliant parts of each and mesh them together like sexy mesh hat or nothing. Dawgman, please, think about what you've betrayed todo that. Think on that, pleaze. Plz from Anonymous

I assume this is my brother, but I will answer it seriously anyway. I do, in fact, know both the philosophies of absurdism and nihilism very well (as you have so pedantically asked) and I agree with your analogy of them being in the same room, but for some different reasons. You are correct in asserting that absurdism is about creating one’s own meaning, but you have gone over the very important idea that it is creating one’s own meaning in spite of the lack of apparent meaning inherent in the world. This is where the two philosophies overlap, of course, and certainly shows that one must agree with some of the ideas of nihilism to be an absurdist at all; this is not a bad thing at all, it is actually quite good, as it shows that many different people with nearly any kind of background can at least agree on some very important things.

Updated my ‘About’ page…

***

Today (19 February 2012) I decided I’d actually start filling this page with some information about myself. I’ll start in some sort of format-thing where I give myself a bit of a prompt and continue writing to where-ever it takes me (in a stream of consciousness manner, as most of my writing is in (in its most organic form, at least)).

…so in the time that I wrote all of the previous paragraph I decided to change up what I’m doing a bit; before I do eventually write with the prompt type things I’ll do a quick little piece where I sum myself up into a paragraph or two.

My name is Adam Joseph Cloutier (the name ‘Adam’ has always fit me well but I have always wanted to have a different first name (I don’t know why (or what the name to replace it would be, for that matter) but that is always how I’ve felt about it)) and my primary interests include football (the clubs I support are as follows (more or less in order of how much I am dedicated to them): TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, West Ham United FC, FC Nordsjælland, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, and Manchester City FC (I am also quite sympathetic towards Chelsea FC) (nationally, I support the FFF (both male and female) and secondarily follow the Japanese women’s team)), the country of France (as well as most things related to it (excluding Paris)), philosophy (if you couldn’t tell from the title of the blog (I have also decided that Albert Camus is my favorite human being that I know of (and it would be pretty damn hard to top the amazingness of both him and his writings))), writing and literature (especially in the stream of consciousness (and philosophical (just sound philosophy, though (unlike Kierkegaard who gets so close (and then makes no mistake of philosophically hanging himself (hey, look, another reference to Albert Camus))))) manner (which has probably been made pretty clear up to this point)), and music (of which I will just dig myself into a deeper hole of parentheses if I decide to talk about it here (which I’ll be doing later anyway (and I am doing now (well not ‘now,’ if you’re reading this (but I think you get my point))))).

Well, I certainly expected it to be disorganised, but not to such an extent; now, onto the writing (that was just a warm-up)!

(Will be updated again soon (I say that, but it’ll probably be another week or so until I do))

Believe the hype and you’d think Arsenal were about to fall out of the Football League. Instead they’re fourth in the league and got further than both Manchester teams in the Champions League.
So let’s not panic, eh?

Seriously; to all Arsenal fans, try being a supporter of West Ham or, I don’t know, most other football clubs.
“B-but… but no silverware in ten years! TEN BLOODY YEARS!”
Hey, I know, but that is not nearly as big of a deal as you’re making it out to be. This may just be different for me since I love football because of the beauty of the game and not because I want my club to walk away with enough trophies that they need to hire others to hold them for them. Not to say that wouldn’t be great, but it is an ideal, an ideal that does not need to happen for me to be happy with the clubs I support; I will always be happy with the clubs I support as long as they play football (preferably to play football well, but I won’t react as though the manager of the club has committed serious crimes against humanity if they do not).
Everyone, please stop acting as though Arsenal are at risk of dissolving entirely and the mothers of every player promptly given cancer. As you can see, that isn’t happening. Now sit down, and shut the fuck up. View Larger

I just thought I should thank you for having such a super amazing blog :) so THANK YOU! from onegram

Oh wow, thank you for this!

I would also like to add to this answer a message to my followers that I will be adding something to the “About” section very soon, as I have gotten some requests to do so. Look forward to seeing it in about a week (I am a perfectionist, and I have ADD and OCD (both diagnosed, not just as internet terms)).

EDIT: Also, onegram (the inquirer, in this case) has an awesome blog that is definitely worth checking out and following.

I hope you know that absurdism and nihilism are quite different theories... they have the same underlying principle, but while nihilism is more 'life has no purpose and everything sucks', absurdism is 'life has no purpose and why don't you embrace it?' You can't be both an absurdist and a nihilist, it doesn't make sense. from Anonymous

As an individual I can be both and have any ideals I want, I take different principles from each philosophy to create my own post-postmodernist philosophy (though I can definitely see where you are coming from).

thedarshan:

It really comes to something when the Manchester City fans are gloating less about their 6x1 win than fans of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea et al.

I think that’s just because everybody loves to see champions fail; I myself am a West Ham supporter, but it was fun to rub it in the face of my friend who supports Man U for a little bit. Society loves to put people on a pedal stool just so they can knock ‘em down (I know this is from a movie or something, please let me know if you know what it is from).

I think that you're probably my favorite person that I don't know very well. And I love your hair. You should post more of those survey things. from si3rra

Well, I hardly ever see them, but if I do, I will (just for you (and me)).
